Suggested title for a book on the current scandals: “We told you so, you f@(%!ng fools!”

In the book In Denial: Historians, Communism, and Espionage, a great story is told about historian Robert Conquest. He wrote a book in the 1980s about the abuses of Stalinism, and got the usual roasting from Soviet apologists in academia. They accused him of cherry-picking data, failing to see Stalin’s supposed good points – the usual blather of Marxist-friendly social science academics.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, opened archives showed that Conquest not only had it right, but was actually a bit conservative is his assertions. His publisher suggested an updated edition of the book incorporating that information, and asked Conquest if he wanted to change the title.

Conquest responded “How about ‘I told you so, you f*cking fools’”? *

I’m feeling that same impulse after reviewing the cascade of scandals over the last few weeks.** Anyone who wasn’t mesmerized by Obama and actually paying attention already knew that:

1. Benghazi was not just a tragedy. It was one of the most massive screw-ups ever perpetrated by the State Department, and there was clearly a cover-up to keep the rest of us from finding out the what, where, when, how, and why.

2. The IRS was targeting and harassing limited government groups.

3. Fast and Furious was a botched effort to engineer evidence in favor of gun control.

4. Fox News was being targeted by the administration from its earliest days.

Various folks on the right could see all this, yet our supposed smart media pundits at major organizations are still expressing surprise at every new revelation. In other words, we told you so, you f*cking fools. And we were ignored, or even ridiculed as paranoid and obsessive.

I learned a valuable lesson in my first job out of graduate school. The software company I worked for was acquired by a giant corporation. The executives from that giant corporation came down for meetings after the acquisition. After listening to them for a day, I concluded that they were incompetent fools.

But I had some doubt. How could they have reached such a position of authority and still be such fools?

Yet, in the ensuing years, under their leadership, the giant corporation lost tens of millions of dollars running that small software company into the ground. They ended up selling it after five years for about five percent of what they paid for it. So yeah, those guys really were the incompetent fools I thought they were.

I now assume that if I have good reasons to believe something, the assertions of powerful or influential people don’t change my mind. I assume they are simply ignorant, willfully blind, or actively deceptive. This round of scandalous outrages by the Obama administration is just another confirmation of that assumption. If media types and establishment politicians didn’t realize these problems existed before last month, then they are f*cking fools, no matter how high they have risen in the political class.

On the other hand, if they knew the problems existed and did nothing, they are despicable villains and not fit to be in the job they hold. Not in their own eyes, of course. As Robert Conquest found out, to those on the left, even Josef Stalin isn’t really a villain.

* I first saw the anecdote about Conquest in a review of the book in Reason Magazine, Fools for Communism. I got the book, which is a concise, good read. If you want examples of willful blindness by lefties, In Denial is a great source.

** Many writers predicted Obama scandals early in his term. I’m pretty sure they feel the same lack of surprise, even if they don’t express it in such a vulgar way.

  • Instead of just saying “told you so” how about just punching them?  I joke…..sort of.

    • noogies?…

      icy/hot in their underwear?

    • Of the record, punching them isn’t enough for me any more, someone needs to pay for the sink hole they’ve created, really.

But I never said that, it’s off the record.

I want to be perfectly clear about that, and totally transparent.

And I don’t know who typed that, the first time I was aware I posted that was when I read it here.

  • Diana West has a new book out that seems to take up where Conquest left off.

Seems like a pretty compelling case, explaining how you wind up with the Erps of the world.  Sort of…

  • ” failing to see Stalin’s supposed good points”

    o.0

    Good points?
Okay, okay, uh….let me see…..he pioneered photo shopping?

    • Oh, that’s a much better candidate for “good point” than I had in mind.

I was thinking the likely rationalization was “Sure, he killed people. But he killed the right people.” That, along with the old standby that he fought Hitler, is enough for lefties. They conveniently ignore the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, of course.

      • Oh, and that cute historical vignette where he was taking food from his own people to send to the Wehrmacht when they were invading Poland.
THAT is one of my personal favs…

  • “So yeah, those guys really were the incompetent fools I thought they were.”
Regrettably I spent years thinking it was ME that was a fool and these movers and shakers were all they were billed to be.
Invariably it’s worked out as you describe.

and thus we rise in life until we achieve the glorious and well earned sobriquet of ‘grumpy old guy’, and realize that all those grumpy old guys we knew when we were “hot property” really understood WTF was happening when we thought they were just being old and grumpy.

  • But Obama then suggested he’d draw the line at “climate change” deniers. “If I’ve got somebody who has a different approach to dealing with climate change — I don’t have much patience for people who deny climate change, but if you’ve got creative approaches, market-based approaches, tell me about them.  If you think I’m doing it the wrong way, let me know. I’m happy to work with you,” said Obama.

    Still “roping for dopes” apparently.
The Collective cannot let go of their witch-doctor religion.  I has toooooOOOOOoooo much potential for power and income redistribution world-wide.

    • And they got Apple to take in poor Lisa Jackson, who couldn’t get a regular job due to mental incapacity.

    • In retrospect I’m still trying to discern the difference between their proposed answers to global warming and dropping virgins into smoking volcanoes.

      • The difference is you can see the victim when a virgin is dropped into a smoking volcano. With a massive government controlled global redistribution scheme, the victims are always invisible. Still very real, but it’s very difficult to say “Look! That guy RIGHT THERE lost his job because of a carbon tax.”

  • If This isn’t a case for impeachment? What’s it going to take? Corruption? Assassination? Repeated Unconstitutional actions? Check, check and check.
The: “If you do, you’ll be stuck with retarded Uncle Joe Biden as President” insurance card isn’t holding traction for me anymore.

    • In a world with Superman, where “truth, justice and the American way” actually meant something, I would agree.  But Washington is so lost.
It’s all one old cretins club down there.

    • How dangerous in comparison to Barack is Joe Biden?   That’s the only question.   Is the danger malicious intent to destroy or simply bumbling incompetence.   I think we can survive bumbling incompetence, and I think that’s Joe.

      • I should add, it won’t be an issue, because I am firmly convinced, under no circumstances are we going to impeach Barack Obama unless perhaps he commits murder of a small child, on camera, during a State of the Union address (and then there will be writers from Politico, BuzzFeed and Salon who will swear the child was a Tea Party Republican midget who had been threatening him for months).

        • He’s done in 2016 anyways. Better to spend the capital to make changes. Plus we can demand he implement them, because wasn’t he also “outraged?”

      • I don’t think that even Democrats want a President Biden.  He is the ultimate Chance Gardener.

  • Here is the REAL danger from the Obamabanana Republic, and one that will be very hard to root out…

It is appropriate that the worst scandal of the Obama administration – the IRS targeting of conservatives – is a scandal of administrators and bureaucrats, of otherwise faceless people endowed with immense power over their fellow citizens and running free of serious oversight from elected officials.
They are the shock troops of the vast bureaucratic apparatus of the federal government. Its growth has been one of President Obama’s chief goals, and the one he has had the most success in achieving. He has greatly enhanced the reach and power of regulatory agencies that are an inherent offense against self-government, even when they aren’t enforcing the law in a biased way.
The administration’s corruption isn’t bags of cash or lies about interns; it is the distortion of our form of government by sidestepping democratic procedures and accountability and vesting authority in bureaucrats. The administrative state is, fundamentally, the Lois Lerner state.

Had the people at IRS been LESS ham-fisted in their bias, would anything that has happened escape the efforts of teh Mushroom Media to deny it?
    These are dangerous times.

  • You forgot the head of the EPA using a fake name and private email address to avoid FOIA. They also waived fees for groups they liked and did not for groups they did.
Also Sebelius activities in general have been scandal worthy.

    • Oh, again…WORSE.  Jackson used several fake email accounts…which is a Federal crime, I think…to co-ordinate EPA activity with enviro-fascists.  She USED FOIA to funnel information to favored groups, and stonewalled others.
She’s-Bilious has broken SEVERAL campaign laws, and laws governing money flowing from the regulated to the regulator.
      These are outlaws.

    • That one should have been on the list of questions a couple of days ago.

Is she the one who just got the cushy job with Apple? Or is that a different EPA crony?

  • New “there” on Benghazi…
American officials “instructed Benghazi hospital to list [US Ambassador] Stevens as ‘John Doe,’” Sharyl Attkisson reports at CBS:
U.S. officials gave instructions for Benghazi Medical Center to use a “John Doe” pseudonym on the death certificate of Ambassador Christopher Stevens after he died of asphyxiation in the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attacks on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya. That’s according to a U.S. official speaking on condition of anonymity because the official isn’t authorized to speak publicly on the matter. The reason for the pseudonym, says the official, was to avoid drawing undue attention to the importance of the victim as Americans rushed to figure out how to recover Stevens’ body and return it to the U.S.
“Undue attention” from whom? As one person tweeted today in response to Attkisson’s story, ” if that does not say cover-up don’t know what does”.
    —Ed Driscoll

    Indeed.  Again.  Some more.

    • Yeah, because since the Libyans who attacked the place are probably the guys who dragged the body out…it’s all unclear IMHO, THEY wouldn’t know he was there would they.

And if it was the government ‘rescuers’, THEY wouldn’t know either would they….

I mean, Al Jazera only announced on the 12th that he was dead after a ‘local hospital’ confirmed it.

These guys are such lying assholes, especially Mr Las Vegas campaign.
