Broadcasting over his head
Posted by Jon Henke

God help me, I will never understand how Sean Hannity ever became so popular on the radio. He ranks 2nd, behind Rush Limbaugh, as the most-listened to talk show host in radio. Whatever one may think of Limbaugh's politics, he is undeniably one of the greatest radio broadcasters in history - easily in the top 3.

But Hannity? A letter at Andrew Sullivan's blog says it for me.....

Hannity is an overrated loudmouth whose debating skills are an embarrassment to the causes he is trying to represent. Your criticism of Kerry's whining and trying to turn everything into an attack on his patriotism could equally be applied to Hannity, who tries to reply to every argument with the same overwrought clichés. I think the phrase 'blundering punditry' just about perfectly characterizes his meager contribution to the national debate."
I've listened to Sean Hannity on occassion, though rarely with much satisfaction. What I've been struck by, more than anything else, is just how unconvincing he is. In fact, in most of the instances in which he's actually debated a topic....my impression was that he lost. Of course, since he controls the microphone and the kill switch, he ended the calls and continued on....but it was pretty apparent that he was out of his league.

There are a lot of good talk show hosts out there - Lionel, Boortz, Mike McConnell - why in the world is this guy the "Hair to the Throne"?

Finally, in regards to Hannity's new book "Deliver Us From Evil: Defeating Terrorism, Despotism and Liberalism", Sullivan writes...

Peaceful Democratic leftists, however misguided, are not terrorists. Hannity, of course, is a thug. But that shouldn't mean we should simply ignore this kind of slur. This moral equivalence is as disgusting when it appears on the right as it is when it appears on the left. So why is the right so quiet when it is displayed by one of their own?
He's absolutely right. It's disgusting, and Hannity deserves our derision. He's got mine.

Yet their actions, in many cases, actually produce terrible outcomes also. Just ask the legions of minority schoolkids in NYC who have been so poorly served and put into great probability of a life of poverty and struggling because of the liberal policies that were foisted on the school system. or ask the "peaceful liberals" how many Iraqis they would've left to fill in new mass graves because they either supported the immoral concept of pacifism, or just because they were in a snit at Bush.

Is liberalism "evil"- well, not inherently. The peaceful liberals have good intentions. But the road to hell is paved full of them. And liberals who blindly miss the failings of the positions they take and the beliefs they hold- the failings that cause so much trouble and misery- are also a dreadful problem for the country.

Couldn't agree with you more, Jon. About twice a year, I have to make a roadtrip with a colleague of mine from work who is a huge Rush and Hannity fan and I get six hours of their shows forced on me. I don't particularly like listening to Limbaugh, because you know what he's going to say and what positions he's going to take before you even turn on the radio, but at least he's a professional broadcaster and knows how to run a show. Hannity is a pathetic, boring hack who does nothing but read GOP talking points.

My wife listens to talk radio in the car (I don't touch the stuff myself) and won't listen to Hannity anymore. Her main complaint was that he was rude and offensive to callers - she said after listening to him, she was ready to become a Democrat.
