They want it so bad, they can taste it

The Washington Post's David Ignatius spends his 750 words today begging John McCain to join a Kerry-McCain ticket. The country, he pleads breathlessly, needs you, Senator McCain.

It's quite touching, really, watching the press fawn all over McCain. But, you gotta ask yourself this question: Does McCain seem like the kind of guy who'd be happy spending 4 or 8 years in the dead end of the VP's office, getting out only to attend funerals for foreign heads of state?

As Ignatius admits, McCain is cranky, impulsive, and headstrong. Not really qualities you want in your Vice Presidents. And requiring him to switch to an explicitly pro-choice position, a position he has consistently opposed for his entire political career, would seem to me to be the kind of requirement that a cranky, headstrong guy like McCain would bridle at.

On the other hand, McCain really does see himself sitting in the big office on Pennsylvania Avenue. And, a lifelong comittment to principle on thinks like, say, school choice, was hardly a barrier to Joe Leiberman last time round, when political exigencies required him to abandon them.

So, I guess an even better question is, how badly does McCain want to be president?

Hey, here's a really cool scenario: McCain becomes John Kerry's VP for four years, resigns, then becomes Kerry's opponent in the '08 elections, using the insider knowledge he's gained as VP since '04 to hammer Kerry like a ten-penny nail.

Man, I'd pay money to see that.

Wow - that might be worth losing the '04 race to see.

My only reservation is that, while I think McCain would have been an excellent war-time President, I'm not so sure his competency will be in quite so high demand in '08. Not that peace will have broken out everywhere, but I'm not sure we'll be in the same circumstances in which we find ourselves now.

But dear sweet merciful crap would that be nice.

What about McCain as a third-party candidate? It's too late, right? he would have had to have laid logistical groundwork and met deadlines to get on the ballot ...

A damn shame - I really think that he could take it at this point ...

I notice that for all they seem to love McCain, they never mention that HE should be president instead of their Democrat figurehead.

Sure, both sides have to give up things that matter to them this election, so why don't the Dems give up their shot at the Presidency ;)

McCain.....is overrated. A faux-maverick.

Clinton (D) vs McCain (R) in '08?

One opportunist joining another, I think.

By the way, lets just clarify: What they want so badly that they can "taste it" is the (D) in the White House, not McCain or anything he can bring to it after election day.

What they want is McCain to be a useful fool for the benefit of John Kerry.

Suppose McCain does this, and decides to run for Pres at some point. He'll have an incredibly hard time getting a lot of Republican votes, and the Dems. will probably make sure they give him a very strong challenge in the primary round.

If he does this, VP is as far as he goes.

He wants to be President? His best path is what he's doing now, becoming everyone's media darling- and then running in the NEXT election.

I'm sure McCain's ego is swelling over this. But it's not going to happen. Aside from the numerous positions where McCain diverges from the Democratic party line, there's a big scandal in his past: Keating. Don't think it wouldn't be used against him, the gloves would be off if McCain accepted the VP nomination from the other party.

So now Kerry wants to delay accepting the nomination so he can spend his primary campaign money as long as Bush can.

*SIGH*

And he wonders why Bush can endure so much bad news and setbacks and STILL outpoll him. Does he really think the public doesn't see this and get disgusted by it?
