They don't care about Iraq per se. Iraq is a convenient excuse, and a place to gather to kill westerners. If they gave a half a shit about "Muslims", they'd have been pulling these stunts when Saddam was in power. Saddam brutalized Muslims a whole hell of a lot more than we ever could. I would guess they see the traction they get in the West with "Iraq, the excuse" and they use it to divide the enemy. They certainly use the "useful idiots." The useful idiots apparently never learned the lessons regarding the Commies. Why would I think they'd learn the lessons now? Posted by: W at September 1, 2004 02:42 PM |

Agree. God forbid this ever happens here. Can you imagine- taking children hostage? Doom all of them. If it takes nukes, so be it.

Agreed. Not much more needs to be said ... only done. Posted by: MichaelW at September 1, 2004 03:28 PM |

McQ: Why are you so upset? It's not like they are your children. It's posible that Miseur Putin will make a big deal with the Chechen freedom fighters. All of the children will be released unharmed and in return the Russian women have to wear headscarves. Miseur Putin could rename "Russia" to "Dhimmiya" and promise to vote on UNSC exclusively vith France. Plus, many older Russian women already wear headscarves! It's a win-win. (Sorry for this- my own rage on the subject has rendered me fairly unbalanced.) Posted by: pdq332 at September 1, 2004 06:33 PM |

In 1977 a primary school and train were taken over by hostage takers in The Netherlands. After lengthy negotiations, the train was stormed by flying six Starfighters on afterburner over it, and simultaneously shooting the frozen hostage takers straight through the train using armor piercing bullets. An APC was used to crash through the wall of the school. Six hostage takers and two hostages were killed. There hasn’t been a single hostage taking for political gain since that time in The Netherlands. Having said that, one cannot feel anything but pity for the Chechen population. They have undeniably suffered much under the Czars and Communists, and their bid for increased independence after the fall of the USSR was ruthlessly crushed by Russia in an attempt to retain control over its Southern republics. From the coverage I have seen, literally everything has been destroyed in Chechnya. The fact that Chechens are still fighting shows that the War on Terror cannot be won with bombs alone. The only way to make “Chechnya” go away at this point is to literally put barbed-wire around the entire country and gas all the inhabitants. Are we willing to let that happen? Are we willing to do this ourselves if necessary? Because this is what it may take to “Wipe them from the face of the earth”. Posted by: Marksman at September 1, 2004 09:30 PM |

Only if you believe all Chechens are terrorists and would commit acts like are being committed at this very moment. Posted by: McQ at September 1, 2004 09:45 PM |

There was an awful lot of sympathy at our loss on 9/11. Russia deserves at least as much in this hostage crisis. I hope that we have (quietly) offered any support we can provide to the resolution of this situation. Posted by: TM Lutas at September 2, 2004 10:19 AM |

Why is killing all chechens sounds so unbelievable to you? A single Russian child lost is not worth one million chechen lives, i live in Russia and see the way things are, there are 20 million young Russians who if given a chance would volunteer their "services" to clean up chechnya. I would kill them all myself, to the last. And dont give me the whole "no better than them speech", time for talk is over. If Putin gives us a millitary immunity act, so whatever happens you dont get courtmarchalled i would be in chechnya tomarrow. lets see how much a chechen child bleeds.
