The state of Georgia just saw its governor sign a bill into law that addresses the issue of illegal immigration.
The Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act:
1. Requires contractors or subcontractors doing business with state or local government to use a federal work authorization program to verify the legality of new hires. Effective July 1, 2007, for employers, contractors or subcontractors with 500 or more staff; July 1, 2008, for those with 100 or more; July 1, 2009, for the smallest employers.
2. Establishes penalties for human trafficking —- up to 20 years in prison for subjecting a person to forced labor or sexual servitude. Effective July 1, 2007.
3. Authorizes the state to enter into an agreement with the federal government to have certain Georgia law enforcement officers trained to enforce immigration laws. Effective July 1, 2007.
4. Requires that any illegal immigrant arrested and jailed for a felony or DUI be reported to immigration authorities. Effective July 1, 2007.
5. Regulates the "notarios" industry, non-attorneys who offer immigration assistance services. Effective July 1, 2007.
6. Prohibits employers from claiming wages of $600 or more paid to illegal immigrants as a tax deduction. Effective Jan. 1, 2008. Requires 6 percent state income tax be withheld from an illegal immigrant's wages when an IRS form 1099 has been filed. Effective July 1, 2007.
7. Requires all state and local government agencies to verify the legal status of any adult applying for taxpayer-provided benefits. Effective July 1, 2007.
The Mexican government blasted Georgia's new illegal immigration law Tuesday, calling it a half-measure that discriminates against Mexicans.
Ruben Aguilar, spokesman for President Vicente Fox, told reporters Tuesday morning that implementing parts of the Georgia law could result in "acts of discrimination" against Mexicans living in Georgia. "It's the position of [Fox] that the half-measures in this law are insufficient to resolve ... the complex phenomenon of immigration between Mexico and the United States," Aguilar said.
Funny, I didn't see anything in the law which discriminated against Mexicans specifically. It "discriminates" against all illegals pretty equally as far as I can tell. And frankly, coming from Mexico, I'd suggest they clean up their own house before they begin criticizing others:
Considered felons by the government, these migrants fear detention, rape and robbery. Police and soldiers hunt them down at railroads, bus stations and fleabag hotels. Sometimes they are deported; more often officers simply take their money.
While migrants in the United States have held huge demonstrations in recent weeks, the hundreds of thousands of undocumented Central Americans in Mexico suffer mostly in silence.
And though Mexico demands humane treatment for its citizens who migrate to the U.S., regardless of their legal status, Mexico provides few protections for migrants on its own soil. The issue simply isn't on the country's political agenda, perhaps because migrants make up only 0.5 percent of the population, or about 500,000 people — compared with 12 percent in the United States.
The level of brutality Central American migrants face in Mexico was apparent Monday, when police conducting a raid for undocumented migrants near a rail yard outside Mexico City shot to death a local man, apparently because his dark skin and work clothes made officers think he was a migrant.
Sorry Mexico ... not interested in your opinion of how we handle our business. Especially in light of how you handle yours.

Kinda off topic but, "twelve percent"!?! That’s about 36 Million people. How are there that many "migrants" in the U.S.A.?

I think that # is about right if we’re talking ’immigrants’. The numbers of illegals is floated as upwards of 11 million. Then there were the 10 million or so that were granted amnesty back in the 80’s.
I’d like to see the issue of Mexico and their southern border investigated more. If we handled our border crossers in like fashion, the UN would be even more all over us.
Just as the United States is replacing its legal workers with illegal cheap labor, Mexico is replacing its low wage people(by sending them to the United States) with lower wage immigrants.
Too bad Texas’ Govenor Perry can’t find some backbone to do the same as Georgia. Perry says that it is not the military’s responsibility to handle this, but that police should. However, he doesn’t do a dang thing to help them. Listen to any mayor in the state of Texas tho’ and they will tell you that it isn’t the police’s duty. Passing the buck at it’s finest.
My opinion (thanks for asking)... it is the military’s duty to stop the silent invasion.
Actually, the 11 million number comes from 2000 census numbers and based on how many illegals are reported to have crossed the border each year since, then the total number of illegal aliens is more like 16 million.
as a fellow texan I agree all around Coffee. When I bring up putting troops on the border I am ususaly met with the absurd claim that that is not what an army is for! Can you imagine that! the army is not for securing our borders?!?!? We have really gone a long way to screwupsville.
I would think the reasons for not having the army patrol the border becuase they are not trained for it. Soldiers are trained to be lethal, to kill. Patroling the border is more of a police thing, unless you want mexicans trying to cross the border to be shot, which, however technically justified it might possibly be, would not be a realistic solution.

Why not? (...and yes, I’m being serious)
We seem to have no problem using our military to patrol the Korean border. Seems like ours should be much more important.

IT’S SORRY THAT IT’S FORGOTTEN HOW WE CAME TOGETHER TODAY OF PURE IMMIGRATE AND DON’T FORGET ILLEGAL IMMIGRATE TOO MAKES UNITED SATES...SO HOW CAN WE FORGET OUR GRAND/GRAND MOTHER/FATHER SO THE GOVERNOR HAS BECAME A LEGAL IMMIGRATE THRU HIS PAST PATRENT AS I HAVE BECOME A LEGAL IMMIGRATE TOO THRU MY PAST PATRENT... THE MEXICANS ARE THE TARGET OF GEORGIA’S POLITICAINS THE MEX ARE GOING TO BE A LEADING FORCE OF GEORGIA AND IS NOTED...GEORGIA FORGETS THAT RIGHT NOW IN TEXAS THE AMERICANS ARE HUNTING THE MEXICAN AND SHOOT THEM FOR BEING A TREAPASSER... AMERICAN WAKE UP..... THE FUTURE IS NO LOOKING GOOD IF THE MEXICAN ARE BEING HUNTED BY THE GUN......
Ok First, Chris, I am in the military and to say that we are trained to be lethal killers is an extremists view of the military. Every soldier carries on them a card that is tittled The Laws of Armed Conflict. Bet you didnt know we actually had laws for a gunfight huh. One of those laws is we can not fire unless we are fired upon. Now the question you may want to know if you are in the military is what constitutes being shot at. Well if you can see an enemy with a gun and he is firing in the air and you kill him. You are going to jail. If you have an enemy running at you with his gun and but is not firing and you shoot him, you are going to jail. If an enemy shoots in your direction but is clearly not shooting at you but mearly trying to intimidate you and you shoot and kill him, you are going to jail. NOW if you hear the bullet whiz by your ear, see it hit an object within feet of you, see your buddy get shot through the throat, or God forbid get shot yourself. Then and only then can you return fire. What I have written may sound like I have no idea what I am talking about. But before you judge search for The Laws of Armed Conflict on the net, I think you will be quite suprised. NOW lets talk about History. It seems apparent to me that you were doodling, asleep, talking, board with, or perhaps you were out the day they tought the entire history of the world. So I will give you a quick tutorial so the next time you give your opinion about militaries, soldiers, and what we are or are not you can stress your point with more information. Since the dawn of man wars have been fought over boarders. Well just look at the 100 years war between France and Britan, (boarder war). Or how about the Iran Iraq war, (boarder war) How about more recent events. Pakastan and India are fighting over a small boarder town to this day. "What does any of this have to do with poor Mexican imagrants?" you say. Well follow me son I’m gettin to it. But before I go any further I need to bring Chezsan into this conversation. Its true about 90% of us can trace our ancestorial line back to an immagrant, with 3% being American Indians and the other 7% being a group of people I like to call, "settlers". Of course this is not a new term I know but I’m trying not to lose you. You see when the new world was found way back in 1492 ( that by the way is a significant date you may want to become familiar with) Europian countries started sending settlers over to claim lands for their home countries. So anyone who came to the new world in fact would not be an immagrant but simple moving to another part of the same country, kind of like moving from Maine to California. SO they were not immagrants or even illegal, just fellow countrymen. In 1776 a war was fought ( war of Independance) which was to give us life, liberty, in the pursuit of happiness, I love that part. Well we win and from then forth we are known as the United States of America. Shortly after boarder wars that were fought for a little more than 50 years ( not straight) The United States began processing immigrants from all over the world. In 1892 Ellis Island was opened and processed more than 22 million ( 22,000,000) immagrants. See back then there were not enough people in the US to really make a strong thriving nation so we wanted immagrants. All you had to do to become a citizen was apply, get asked some questions, take the pledge, swear to defend your new nation agaist all enemies both foreign and domestic. Which by the way is the same pledge military service members still take when entering the service. Those laws that made immagrants citizens back then are still in place today. However It would seem some think they dont have to follow our laws, or perhaps dont want anyone to know they were muerders, drug dealers, or terrorists. So they sneak accross the boarder to work for anyone who will hire them. and they work hard, make decent money sometimes not very decent and dont pay any taxes. Now I dont know about you but I would love to work and not pay taxes, I could make all kinds of money. But I am proud my immigrant family came here to seak a better life. I am all up for anyone doing so, I just think there is a right way and a wrong way. Now as far as soldiers patroling the boarder. Well how much money do you think it would take to have a poor mexican, central american or anyone bring a vest of explosives accross the boarder via one of the underground tunnels, walk into a shopping mall and kill eveyone within 100 yards of the bomb. How much do you think it would cost? How hard could it be for a terrorist to come across the boarder the same way and hijack another plane, or Amtrak and crash it into a busy metro area? Now I ask you, if you thought your chances of being shot as you cross the boarder at an " illegal" spot were high would you cross? or would you take the time to go ahead and fill out the paper work and become a citizen like more than 100 million people before you did. Whats wrong with that. Should the military patrol our boarders? Are you kidding. Should the US Gov’t make laws to prevent hiring illegals? My question is why are you illeagal in the first place. Should Mexico’s Vicenta Fox even open his mouth to the US for any reason. Why yes he should, AFTER he covers his own a**. If something is not right, fix it. If you dont put forth the 110% it takes to do so. Then shut up and that goes for anyone who cries foul from there couch. COFFEE rock on my friend
hi, i dont know how i got here but its really sad to see how you think about anyone else that isnt "american". stop being so paranoic... and as you know so much about history please study mexican history and for that, all latin american history so you would understand why mexicans are going to work to your country, and realize that not everyone is trying to kill you... speacially mexicans... a thing you should know, in mexico terrorism doesnt exist and it has never existed. If mexicans are going tu the US its about other reasons, like surviving, and have a better life just like your ancestors ones wanted. And if they dont do it legally its because you dont want to, you make it really hard to a mexican... believe me, mexicans dont mind to pay taxes... have a little tolerance and try to understand our position, and be clear that we are not violent people and we dont think of war as you do... its a pitty to lose all that time thinking of war and who wants to get back at you...and terrorism and all that. be more human and try to have an open mind... I know its a problem for you to have people working, not paying taxes and all that, but thats an economic problem not a security problem... And yes, I am mexican. i live in mexico and i dont have to go to work for you, thank god i dont need that kind of humilliation, because you make mexicans feel that. i just hope you’ll never have to live what we live... because if you do... trust me ... you wont like it... My very best wishes to all of you...
