Europe: Physician heal thyself!
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, February 13, 2007

Next time you read about Europe lecturing us about reducing greenhouse emissions, point them to this and tell them to clean up their own act first:
According to data from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, from 2000-2004—the most recent period for which we have good, comparative data—U.S. greenhouse gas emissions increased by 1.3 percent. This is an increase, but a very modest increase. The EU-25, on the other hand, increased collective emissions by 2.1 percent.
Kyoto's working real well for them, isn't it? Of course the first counter argument you'll hear is the EU-25 includes a bunch of eastern European countries with older dirtier economies. In fact, when they're factored out, it looks even worse:
If the new EU members did not bring down the average, the old EU-15 would get a worse report card—having increased emissions by 2.4 percent during this same time period.

[...]

Now let's be honest—even a 2.4 percent increase for the EU-15 is a very modest increase. But given the way this issue gets talked about publicly in Europe, I would venture to say that few people in Europe know that from 2000 to 2004, EU-15 emissions grew at nearly double the U.S. rate, and that Europe, at least during this period, has been moving away from-not towards-its Kyoto target of an 8 percent cut.
So, Europe, save your lectures for internal discussion, thank you very much.

But signing Kyoto would allow us to push the Chinese into compliance—prof Erb explained this to us. After all, the lefties who refuse to fight the war on terror are all about environmentalism. They will go to war to make the world green . . .

Yes, I asked what enforcement techniques he thought would be effective to force them into compliance and, well, he ignored the question all together!

That’s probably, as they say, minutiae, that someone else can deal with while the ’big thinkers’ go off and tackle other problems of great moment.

Want to know what the debate about global warming would be like if we didn’t have various political types using it for their nefarious purposes? Here is an article from India:
”Experts question theory on global warming

New Delhi, February 11, 2007

Is the available data enough to believe that the glaciers are retreating due to global warming?

Some experts have questioned the alarmists theory on global warming leading to shrinkage of Himalayan glaciers. VK Raina, a leading glaciologist (sic) and former ADG of GSI is one among them.

He feels that the research on Indian glaciers is negligible. Nothing but the remote sensing data forms the basis of these alarmists observations and not on the spot research.

Raina told the Hindustan Times that out of 9,575 glaciers in India, till date, research has been conducted only on about 50. Nearly 200 years data has shown that nothing abnormal has occurred in any of these glaciers.

It is simple. The issue of glacial retreat is being sensationalised (sic) by a few individuals... His views were echoed by Dr RK Ganjoo, Director, Regional Centre for Field Operations and Research on Himalayan Glaciology... He also maintained that nothing abnormal has been found in any of the Himalyan (sic) glaciers studied so far by him. ...Another leading geologist MN Koul of Jammu University, who is actively engaged in studying glacier dynamics in J&K and Himachal holds similar views. Referring to his research on Kol glacier ( Paddar, J&K) and Naradu (HP), he said both the glaciers have not changed much in the past two decades.”

I’m very sorry, I’ll try not to lecture you again, America. :-(

It’s only because I care gosh-darnnit!

Drat, that failed. I had chaged my name to Europe and put the EU webpage in. It would have been a little bit funny and then I would have sent one saying it was me. Sadly, it changed my name back to the default and so the tiny humour that was there has now vanished.

oh well ...
