The semantics games are interesting all around. After all, what makes "natural gas" natural, and petroleum not? |

And is she aware that Natural Gas is, in fact, a fossil fuel?

Perhaps she thinks natural gas is the methane gas produced by the digestive systems of cows.
I leave it to others to make the all too obvious jokes about gas production. |

Maybe she confused natural gas with hot air. Something the congress seems to produce in abundance at taxpayer’s expense. The yield has gone up in the past couple of years, too. |

I’m not sure when it was that stupidity took hold of Democrats. Amity Shlaes’ book "The Forgotten Man" discusses the genesis of the FDR "brain trust," made up in part by some clowns who traveled in the ’20s to the Soviet Union to see the really big ideas in action. Jonah Goldberg in "Liberal Fascism" explores the roots of pre-WWI "progressives" in such lunatic trends as eugenics.
But to heavily paraphrase the jurisprudential lunatic Oliver Wendell Holmes to describe Pelosi (and Harry Reid, of course), "the sixth generation of imbeciles is really enough to make one laugh and cry at the same time."
Each successive leader of the Democrats in the House makes the last leader look like a former colleague of Albert Einstein’s at the Institute for Advanced Study. Who would have believed that Richard Gephardt could look now like such a towering figure? If the trend continues the next Democratic House leader should make Pelosi look like Margaret Thatcher. Who could do that? Goldie Hawn?
And each successive leader of the Democrats in the Senate makes the previous worm/carnival barker look like a Jesuit scholar. It’s amazing how Daschle, one of the greasiest creeps ever, has been transformed, in contrast to Reid, into someone who looks like he teaches Canon Law at Notre Dame. Just as Daschle transformed George Mitchell, the cipher’s cipher, into an international statesman. The next leader would have to be almost non-sentient to have that effect on Reid, but fortunately the Democrats have a very strong bench in the Senate. I’m thinking Barbara Boxer has what it takes.
Look at the succession of presidential candidates post-Mondale: Dukakis (dweeb social!st destroyed by a tank ride); Clinton (fellated in the Oval Office by a White House intern); Gore (inventor of the internet and global warming); Kerry (after 4 months in Vietnam came back to trash his comrades, bag the richest widow available, and run for president as the champion of the common man); Obama (mentored by Jeremiah Wright under the James Cone system of hate).
If only Stalin knew! |

Stupid question time, but is she unaware that "clean burning" means it produces little else besides water vapor and the dreaded CO2? And that combustion in the Earth’s atmosphere will always produce H2O and CO2, regardless of what you’re burning?
Not that I buy into AGW, but I’m sure she does...
Is she also unaware that strapping 50-200 pounds of high-pressure, highly flammable vapor into 1500-3000 pound metal missiles (i.e. cars) that travel at speeds between 10 and 100 miles per hour might not be the safest thing in the world? |

Zach,
the difference with natural gas is the proportion of C02 produced versus the energy produced.
The ratio of carbon atoms to hydrogen atoms is 1:4. In long hydrocarbon chains like petroleum derivatives, the ratio aproaches 1:2. When burned, NG produces a higher precentage of energy from Hydrogen.
Thats why its considered ’cleaner’. Not that I buy AGW either.
As for other fuels, you could take wood, burn it and as long as the forrest is allowed to regrow back to its old size in terms of mass, there will be no net C02 produced. The biofuels are somewhere in between depending on the process to make them.
I wonder what the look on Pelosi’s face would be if someone proposed a C02 neutral wood-fired powerplant. |

We could start that with the wood ’green’ renewable hotel room pass keys the Dems were demanding in Denver. It seems they turned out to be better as souvenirs or fire starters than actual key cards for the rooms. |

Xrlq, In answer to your question about why natural gas is called "natural":
Its predecessor was called "Town Gas" and was made by partially combusting coal in an extremely oxygen limited environment. This produced combustible gases, mostly a blend of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane, that could be piped around and used in lamps and streetlights etc. Being as they were piping carbon monoxide (the gas that kills you if you run your car in a sealed garage) into homes, it was also pretty dangerous. The lamplighters walking around Victorian England would have been lighting lamps fueled with town gas.
By drilling for methane as an alternative, it became known as natural gas...it came right from nature.
It is also interesting that "Clean Coal" integrated gasification effectively relies on the same process to produce the same blend of combustible gases which is now known as syngas...synthetic natural gas, an oxymoron if there ever was one. |

Yeah, but does she know you get to natural gas by drilling? The New York Times, in a little noticed article on Natural Gas:American natural gas production is rising at a clip not seen in half a century, pushing down prices of the fuel and reversing conventional wisdom that domestic gas fields were in irreversible decline. That describes the whole deal, with only one period used. I wonder; Has Nancy seen it? |

Question: If all cars were electric or NG tomorrow how much less petroleum would we use?
Answer: Very little.
When petroleum is refined it is "cracked" into many different products: gasoline, diesel, heating oil, lubricants, kerosene and others. The process can be adjusted within small bounds to change the mix slightly. Look around you. Probably half the things you see use a petroleum product. All plastics do. In order to reduce consumption of petroleum you also have to sacrifice all those other products that require petroleum. Ever seen a picture of an oil well that has flames at the top? That’s NG that is unwanted. They just burn it. If we make the fleet "green" you’ll see those same flames over the refineries. That’s the gasoline that is now a throwaway. It’s also not burning near as clean as in a modern combustion engine. |
